Jock Clear (BrawnGP) visits University and MechEng Department

 

Jock Clear, the former Formula 1 engineer and Heriot-Watt graduate recently visited Heriot-Watt’s Mechanical Engineering department.

During his visit Jock, now of BrawnGP, gave a seminar to the first year students followed by a Q&A session where the students had the opportunity to discuss the specific issues of engineering in the context of cutting edge automotive technology.

MechEng PhD Student Wins J.M. Lessels Scholarship

 

Mr. Yifan Liu, currently a first year PhD student from MechEng department and working in the field of microcantilever sensors and microfluidics, has been recently awarded J.M. Lessels Scholarship from the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

British Sugar Prize

 

British Sugar Plc (http://www.britishsugar.co.uk/), the leading supplier of sugar to the UK market, has setup a prize of £150 at Department of Mechanical Engineering Department. The British Sugar Prize will be awarded to a graduating MEng student who has achieved the best performance in project work.

  The latest stamp set launched on 10 March 2009 by Royal Mail includes our own pioneer of the industrial revolution - James Watt.

Dubai Campus announces new courses

 

Heriot-Watt University's Dubai Campus has just announced four new exciting courses available from September 2009.* The School of Engineering and Physical Sciences is offering an undergraduate BEng (Hons) in Automotive Engineering, while the School of the Built Environment is offering a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering. Both of these Schools already offer a highly successful portfolio of undergraduate and Masters level courses from our campus in Dubai.

The National Student Survey 2009

  The National Student Survey (NSS) goes live on Monday 26 January and students who are eligible to participate are strongly encouraged to do so.

Heriot-Watt University Engineering Ranked 6th in National Research Accessment

  The Research Fortnight Analysis from Research Assessment Excercise (RAE 2008) ranks Heriot Watt's General Engineering and Mineral & Mining Engineering as 6th in the UK for research quality and quanity. 

Heriot-Watt University wins two Doctoral Training Centre funding packages

 

Two groups involving Heriot-Watt University have won £11m funding for new Centres which will generate the scientists needed for Britain's future it was announced today (5 December 2008) by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the UK funding body for science and engineering.

New funding for Renewable Energy in Mech. Eng.

  MechEng researcher Dr Tapas Mallick recently received a total of £ 0.8 million worth research funding from EU FP-7, EPSRC and UKIERI for developing renewable energy technologies.

School of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the Carnegie Festival

 
The School of Engineering & Physical Sciences has been invited to attend the Carnegie Festival in Dunfermline. Their “Cyberneering” activities will be part of the Festival of Innovation and Enterprise and will involve a number of drop-in sessions, including “Sensing with Light”, Lego Robots and “Mixing it Up”; a variety of hand-on activities illustrating fundamentals of Physics, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering.

Summer Graduations 2008

 

Professor Sir Timothy O’Shea, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh; Youssef Boutros Ghali, Finance Minister, Government of Egypt and Mel Young, Social Entrepreneur were three of the Honorary Graduates who joined hundreds of Heriot-Watt students at the summer Graduation ceremonies which took place at the Edinburgh and Scottish Borders Campuses this month.

Clean Water from Clean Energy

 

The latest innovative projects from Scotland's universities and research institutions to be supported by Scottish Enterprise's Proof of Concept Programme were announced recently. Among them was a joint project between the Universities of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt to develop a water filtration system powered by renewable energy.

The HWU Mechanical Engineering Society visited the Museum of Flight

 
The HWU Mechanical Engineering Society visited the Museum of Flight, in East Fortune, on the 18th April 2008. The Concorde, a G-BOAA decommissioned in 2000 after the Paris accident (this Concorde never underwent any modification), is on exhibition there.

EPS participated the Edinburgh International Science Festival 2008

  The school of engineering and physical sciences has a number of exhibits this year in the Edinburgh International Science Festival (EISF) which is taking place from 25 March to 5 April 2008.
