Surface mechanics:  The study of surfaces and surface coatings includes tribology in conventional and micro-devices, as well as structure property relationships for the coatings themselves. The first of these involves mapping the failure modes and mechanisms in high stress corrosive/erosive environments and tribological modelling to improve the design of the coating substrate system. More recent work includes research into ZnO thin films, the nanostructure of TiNi, W and Pt sintered powder films, and the development of devices based on free-standing shape-memory alloy (SMA) films .
